Problems & Solutions
  • Poor Adhesion of Cured Film

Film build too high, reduce powder flow

Poor cleaning or pretreatment, check pretreatment equipment and chemicals

Powder coating formulation problem, contact powder manufacturer

  • Color Deviations After Coating

Film thickness too thin, apply higher film thickness

Film thickness varies a lot, assure constant film thickness

Overcuring of powder coating, check curing conditions

Not sufficient hiding power of powder coating, consult powder manufacturer

  • Orange Peel Effect

Too low film thickness, increase the film thickness

Too slow heating rate, increase the heating rate

    Voltage too high, optimize voltage

Too fast curing system or too coarse powder particles, contact powder manufacturer.

  • Pinholes/Blisters in the Film

Powder film too thick, decrease film thickness

Water on the workpiece, check the drier and the workpiece hangers

Moisture content of the powder too high, check the powder storage conditons and humidity of the air supply

Outgassing from porous work pieces (cast parts, galvanized material), preheat the workpiece (before application) to temperature just above the stoving temperature

Contact powder manufacturer to modify powder coating with degassing properties.

  • Poor Chemical Resistance

Under-cured film, increase oven temperature or increase stoving time

Powder coating formulation problem, contact powder manufacturer for more chemical resistant powder.

  • Poor Corrosion Resistance

Poor cleaning or pretreatment, check pretreatment equipment and chemicals

Under-cured film, increase oven temperature or increase stoving time

Powder coating formulation problem, contact powder manufacturer for recommendations.

  • Film Hardness Too Low

Under-cured film, increase oven temperature or increase stoving time

Powder coating formulation problem, contact powder manufacturer.

  • Craters in the Film

Oil or grease residues on the metal surface, check the pretreatment

Oil in the compressed air, check the air supply system

Contamination with silicone, clean the spraying

Contamination with silicone oils from the chain lubrication, clean the spraying are thoroughly

Contamination with incompatible powder, clean the application installation thoroughly

Powder coating problem, contact powder manufacturer

  • Fluctuations in the coating thickness

Irregular powder feed, clean powder feed hoses, pump venturis and guns, check humidity of the air supply which can cause powder compaction and powder free flowing properties

Inadequate gun distance to the workpiece, readjust the distance between gun and workpiece Inadequate conveyer speed in relation to the high voltage of the gun, control voltage fluctuations

Powder blown off from the workpiece, turn down air setting

Pressure fluctuations in the air supply system, move gun position further away from the workpiece and check the air supply system

Powder too fine (reclaim), add virgin powder, change powder.

  • Poor Impact Resistance

Under-cured film, increase oven temperature or increase stoving time

Too high film thickness, readjust the application equipment

Poor cleaning or pretreatment, check pretreatment equipment and chemicals

Powder coating formulation problem, contact powder manufacturer.

  • Poor Fluidization

Fluidizing air too low or too high, change pressure

Powder too fine (reclaim), add virgin powder, change powder

Powder moist, dry powder and store at room temperature.

  • Poor Adhesion

Insufficient grounding, test contacts and transport mechanism

Voltage too high or no voltage, check voltage

Not enough charging, increase voltage, reduce powder flow Wrong particle size distribution, if reclaim powder is involved add virgin powder.

    Insufficient wetting, check pretreatment

Gun distance to part too close, adjust distance.

  • Picture Framing Effect

Powder particles too coarse, consult powder manufacturer

    Voltage too high, adjust voltage

Distance from gun to workpiece too low, adjust distance

Feed air/powder flow too high, adjust powder flow.

  • Back Ionization

Voltage too high, turn down voltage setting

Gun too close to the workpiece, telocate the gun

Too fine powder particle size, too much reclaim added to the virgin powder

Originally delivered powder is too fine, contact powder supplier.

  • Powder Lumps in the Box

Inappropriate storage (temperature too low/too high), strain before use, use fresh powder

Transport too slow or too warm, consult powder manufacturers

  • Powder Puffs on Workpiece

    Uneven transport, check pressure variations

Delivery air moist, check air delivery

Particle size distribution of powder coating too fine, optimize virgin powder plus reclaim ratio

    Nnozzle worn, exchange nozzle

Powder moist, check for condensation (temperature difference from powder storage area to coating area.

  • Poor penetration into recesses and gaps (Faraday cages)

Gun voltage too high, turn voltage setting down

Powder delivery too low, turn up powder delivery air setting

Poor earthing, check earthing connections and contact areas

Inadequate gun position, adjust the gun position so that powder cloud has a direct path to the recess area

The spray pattern is too wide, wrong deflector plate. Change it.
